Grails is the famous Groovy based web application framework. We use it as our auhoring environment. The content you are looking at was generated from a Grails application which manages our content. The result is stored on a filesystem and served up through an Apache server.
jQuery is a great javascript library that makes it possible to write Javascript without the verbosity and general messyness that usually accompanies 'normal' Javascript development. For example, it nicely separates the Javascript from the HTML markup.
We use the juitter jQuery plugin to show a live view of our most recent tweets on the site.
Blender brings professional 3D authoring to the open source arena.
Blender was used to create our 3D graphics (such as the persons in our logo).
It has a bit of a learning curve, the UI is quite particular. Once you know it, it's very powerful and productive.
Inkscape is a great vector based drawing program that natively uses svg as it's data format.
We use inkscape for flow diagrams, network charts, and whenever we need an illustration in a presentation.
Gimp is an excellent raster image editor. We used it to post-process files that were authored in Blender and Inkscape
